Teachings of the Shaktiananda Yoga Technique by Gurudevi, Shri Swami Maha-Shaktiananda

Introduction

"Just like the waves of the ocean. Give love and then, recieve love. To get love, you must give love wherever and whenever you can. This is the Law of Cause & Effect, also known as karma."

~Gurudevi, Shri Swami Maha-Shaktiananda

"It has been said that the path is sometimes a rocky road, so looking for the marks others have made on their upward journey will help you along the way. The journey along the spiritual path without a guide always leads to blind and overconfident egoism.

Lord Shiva and his Shakti give us the instruction and example for Self-Realization. In following the steps to self-mastery the devotee arrives at the feet of the personal Guru which is the reflection of their inner divinity. The relationship between the devotee and the Guru is bonded in sacred trust and devotion to God.

Souls which maintain that nobody has the right to tell them what they are to do on their path, as they themselves know it better - these are merely souls that have been chased into the darkest of blind alleys and led astray off spiritual development.

God has given us one religion, which is Love. It is man who has divided it into this religion and that religion. The many different paths to love God will all eventually bring souls to the same source, the One God."

Yoga Teachings

“Believe in Yourself and never give up.  Anyone who ever achieved
anything in life usually had to keep on trying until they finally

succeeded.  Be positive;  think positive;  and live positive.

Let your mantra be ‘God, Christ, Gurus’ to carry you through all
       of life’s challenges.”  ~Gurudevi, Shri Swami Maha-Shaktiananda

Yoga is an ancient practice from the Himalayan Masters Patanjali and Mahavatar Babaji.  The teachings of Yoga have traveled throughout the world for thousands of years. "ArtStar Yoga" in Emmett, Idaho teaches the Shaktiananda Yoga technique which was developed by ~Gurudevi, Swami Shri Maha-Shaktiananda in 1968 in Canada. ~Gurudevi founded the Self-Realization Shala Order in 1970 in Canada. She is a direct disciple of Premavatar Paramahansa Yogananda; founder of Self-Realization Fellowship in America. Yogananda brought the teachings of Yoga from India to America in 1920.

Ananda Yoga is a classical style of hatha yoga that uses asana and pranayama to awaken, experience, and begin to control the subtle energies within oneself, especially the energies of the chakras.   Its object is to use those energies to harmonize body, mind, and emotions, and above all to attune oneself with higher levels of awareness.  One unique feature of this system is the use of silent affirmations while in the asanas as a means of working more directly and consciously with the subtle energies to achieve this attunement. Ananda Yoga is a relatively gentle, inward experience, not an athletic or aerobic practice.   It was developed by Swami Kriyananda, a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi.

Bikram Choudhury's yoga is hot, hot, hot, so be prepared to sweat, sweat, sweat.  In class, they crank the thermostat up high, then perform a series of 26 asanas designed to "scientifically" warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons.  Founder Bikram Choudhury studied yoga with Bishnu Ghosh, brother of Paramahansa Yogananda.

Shaktiananda yoga was developed in 1968 by ~Shri Maha-Shaktiananda; a direct disciple of ~Guru, Premavatar Paramahansa Yogananda who is the author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi.  This yoga teaching follows a practical, gentle approach to the exercises that includes pranayama, classic asanas, relaxation, meditation, invocation and visualization.  Developed for all ages, including prenatal  yoga exercises, healing massage, kriya cleansing techniques, chakra therapy, tantra and kundalini yoga.  Personal practices are taught privately. Shaktipat and Kriya initiation are for advanced students.  ~Shri Maha-Shakiananda founded Shala-Realization Fellowship in 1970 in Canada.  » Read "Autobiography of a Yoga" by Premavatar Paramahansa Yogananda  Read the Online Book.

Sivananda is one of the world's largest schools of yoga. Developed by Vishnu-devananda and named for his teacher, Sivananda yoga follows a set structure that includes pranayama, classic asanas, and relaxation. Vishnu-devananda wrote one of the contemporary yoga classics, The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga.  First published in 1960, the book is still one of the best introductions to yoga available.

Svaroopa was developed by Rama Berch. Svaroopa Yoga teaches significantly different ways of doing familiar poses, emphasizing the opening of the spine by beginning at the tailbone and progressing through each spinal area in turn.  Every pose integrates the foundational principles of asana, anatomy and yoga philosophy, and emphasizes the development of transcendent inner experience, which is called svaroopa by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.  This is a consciousness-oriented yoga that also promotes healing and transformation.  Svaroopa is not an athletic endeavor, but a development of consciousness using the body as a tool.

Viniyoga is not so much a style as it is a methodology for developing practices for individual conditions and purposes.  This is the approach developed by Sri. T. Krishnamacharya, teacher of well-known contemporary masters B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois and Indra Devi, and continued by his son, T.K.V. Desikachar.  Key characteristic of the asana practice are the careful integration of the flow of breath with movement of the spine, with sequencing, adaptations and intensity dependent upon the overall context and goals. Function is stressed over form.  Practices may also include pranayama, meditation, reflection, study and other classic elements.  Personal practices are taught privately.  Given the scope of practice, the inherent therapeutic applications and the heritage of the lineage, the training requirements for teacher certification are extensive.
